Which king liked to bathe while the band played Rule Britannia? Which queen was so fat she needed a hoist to get on the throne? Which prince shut his wife out of Westminster Abbey to prevent her from being crowned? Who was the blood-thirstiest monarch of them all? Kings and Queens of England is a no-holds-barred account of the British monarchy with the gossip and gore left in, and nothing left out! It leaves no stone unturned in its mission to portray kings and queens as they really were, warts and all.

  • Boy Kings and Girl Queens

    Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall

    language (, Feb. 20, 2010)
This volume for boys and girls was published in 1914. From the Preface: In this book I have told for ordinary boys and girls stories of some of the royal boys and girls who have become Kings and Queens at an age when most children think only of games and toys. One or two of these boy Kings and girl Queens died while yet they were children, others grew to manhood and womanhood, and ruled well or ill. But of their lives beyond the age of twenty-one this book takes no account. The stories are taken from the history of our own land and from that of our near neighbours France and Germany. France our one-time enemy, Germany our constant ally. Other countries too have had child rulers, but I could not tell of all. I have not tried even to tell the stories of all the child rulers of our own land. For Scotland alone furnishes enough to fill a large book. During the three centuries and a half from 1214 to 1567 Scotland had fifteen rulers, ten of whom came to the throne in childhood. These stories of royal children of times gone by will, I trust, have some interest for the happier children of today, who have no burden of sceptre or crown to bear, and whose little feet will never tread the steep and perilous steps of a throne. - H. E. Marshall ............................................................................... CONTENTS: I. The Story of Otto III - The World's Wonder II. The Story of Henry IV - Emperor of Germany III. The Story of Margaret, Queen of Scotland - The Maid of Norway IV. The Story of Isabella of Valois - The Little Queen V. The Story of Henry VI - King of France and England VI. The Story of James II - The Fiery Face VII. The Story of Magdalene of France - The Midsummer Queen VIII. The Story of Edward V - The Captive King IX. The Story of Edward VI - The Boy King X.
